in the Horse Pulling Contest

The Schaack Family has been breeding Quarter Horses for over 40 years. Coming from a family who made their living from horses, by breaking, training, buying, and selling, I was on horseback at the age of two and lived on a horse all of my youth.  My father, "Jug" Henrichs was an outstanding trainer and passed on the love of a good horse to his daughter. Dad and I went to play days from Memorial Day to Labor Day every year. Always taking home many trophies and ribbons. When I left home, I was allowed to take my all around horse with me and I continued to ride horses for other people. My husband Jack and I made sure our kids always had ponies to ride.

In 1969 my husband and I, bought our first brood mare by the name of Cotton Cricket x Smoky's Cotton x Diamond Too, the dam was Sealy's Pride x Bill, from C.W. and Donna Jensen, White River, South Dakota. Cotton Cricket at that time was in foal to Buzz Bar Jr. The following spring she foaled a bay stud colt that we kept and broke as a two year old. "Buzz Bar" was the next all around horse for the whole family. This horse run barrels, poles and was used for team roping, calf roping, hazing, and goat tying. We even borrowed him for a queen horse. Buzz Bar over the years took Wade, Chad, Clay and Tina to win many all around titles, in 4-H and High School rodeos. "Buzz Bar" qualified the kids for State Championships for 19 years, each in turn. The whole family got involved in the production of our local 4-H and High School Rodeos in Watertown, SD.  Jack and I were directors of the 4-H Rodeo for 20 odd years, I was also a 4-H Horse Club Leader for 20 years and we were Directors of the High School Rodeo for 10 years. Our love of the sport and the love of horses and kids kept us involved. All 4 kids were very successful and went on to intercollegiate, SDRA and Pro rodeos.

1969 was also the year we purchased Claude's Adair, black stallion by Claude (NCHA Cutting Horse) and by a King George mare. Our goal at that time was to raise black colored performance horses with great conformation, and a lot of cow and quickness. We crossed Claude on Oklahoma Star, Lighting Bar, Poco Bueno, Wimpy, Showdown, Leo, Otoe, Flapper McCue, and Little Joe Mitchell bred mares.

In 1974 we bought a buckskin 2 yr old stallion by the running horse Tiny Watch, SI 100, total money won $106,990. We crossed Sky Watch on the Adair bred fillies and we had the perfect cross of cow and run. We have always raised horses that would excel in any event and were all good ranch horses. The horse Watch Your Toes (Buck) was one of the greats out of Sky Watch. Buck took Chad to the College finals in the Team Roping, won Clay a Regional Championship in the Great Plains Region of the Intercollegiate Rodeo Association in the Calf Roping, and Tina a win at the National High School rodeo at Shawnee, Okla, in the Breakaway and also helped her win the 5th place all around standing at the College Finals in Bozeman, MT.  At the age of 22, Buck was sold two little girls who also won barrel racing titles on him.  We are sad to write that Buck at age 27 had to be put down this last fall due to an injury, he is truely one of the greatest horses to ever walk and we will all miss him very much.

Over the years we assembled a fine set of mares by Tiny Watch, Otoe, Sargent Tippy, Sonny Champ, Blackburn, Buzz Bar Jr, and Claude's Adair of which we now needed new bloodlines to cross on themIn 1982 we made a trip through the south and ended up at the Clarence Marcus Ranch at Kearny, Neb. Clarence showed us a buckskin yearling colt. This colt was by Spanish Rythm x Skip Fare and by a Bossier Poco x King bred mare. Mr Kino Snip became our potential herd sire. Clarence was to show the colt on the Western Circuit the next spring, but the colt got a fungus in his tail and was not able to be shown, at that time artificial tails were not allowed. The set back didn't stop Kino from becoming an exceptional sire.  A few of his out standing offspring include horses such as Kinos Spanish Sky (Bay), took Tina to the College National Finals Rodeo in the Breakaway at the age of 5 and placed in the top ten.  Spanish Teque, a bay mare, earned Tina a trip to the NHSRF in Goat Tying and also ran barrels and poles. She also took Tina to the College Finals in the Goat tying and to a 5th place win in the all around standings, with the help of Buck in the Breakaway. Clay has hazed on Spanish Kino Dude (Festus) in the pro rodeos, Chad team ropes on Dakota Rythm (Browny), and I ran barrels on Spanish Magnum at the NBHAs and SDRAs. Disposition, conformation and ease of handling are some of their great traits. All these horses trace back to that first mare, Cotton Cricket. Kino was our main herd sire until his death in 1999 from lymes disease.

Misfortune to our family in 1993 brought many changes for us. Jack had a stroke at the age of 51. Two years later our 200 head cow herd was leased out and it was again time to increase the brood mare band. I purchased Sugar Bars, Doc O'lena, Doc's Hickory, Freckles Asset, Easy Jet, Jet Deck and Docs Solano bred mares, along with fillies out of Kino, we have an excellent set of brood mares. The ranch is still in production with the help of the kids, but with the boys having their own operations and families now the breaking and training is back to Tina and I.  Tina has since married a great guy and a great team roper, Chad Lammers and he is also here to help out.  We all go to a lot of NBHAs,  SDRAs, and other jackpots.

We were in need of a stallion in 1997 to cross on the good "Kino" mares We located JD Clarks Poco Bar through a friend. JD is a grandson of Poco Bueno and by a Clarks Doc Bar mare. He was in cutting training and has a good reining handle on him, but with time being short and using him for pasture breeding we didn't campaign him. His colts show good size, conformation and a lot of cow. That same spring a bay stud colt, Spanish Sky Watch, was foaled out of Mr Kino Snip and a grand daughter of Tiny Watch. We knew he was going to be good from the start. "Snippy" is very athletic, look for him in the performance arena next year. His first colts are now turning six years old and they have a lot of style, great confirmation, and are very athletic.  Snippy has turned into a nice barrel and head horse.

We also stood Spanish Sonic Watch, whom is also by Mr Kino Snip and out of a grand-daughter of Tiny Watch.  Sonic is very athletic and has a great disposition.  A very nice horse with great color, black with buckskin points, he has some good buckskin colts on the ground.  Tina runs barrels, breakaways and heads steers on him.  Sonic's first colts are now turning six and we are currently riding them, they are very quiet and athletic, showing alot of potential.  We casturated Sonic in the spring of 2006 but still have alot of nice colts by him.

We are very glad that you have taken the time to learn more about us and our breeding program.  We are very proud of our horses, they are as good as you will find.  If you are interested in coming to the ranch to look for your next champion, give us a call.  We would be happy to show you around - you will not be disappointed!
